Itinerary

Meet a member of our team at Pinhão train station, where you’ll receive a warm welcome and a briefing about your holiday. Afterwards, enjoy a comfortable transfer to your hotel. Settle in, relax and take in the stunning views of the surrounding vineyards — your immersive Douro Valley adventure begins here.

The hike today is a perfect introduction to hiking in the Douro Valley — one of Portugal’s most breathtaking wine regions. The western slopes of the Pinhão Valley are especially rewarding, with terraced vineyards carved into the hillsides and small whitewashed villages that seem frozen in time. It’s a day that beautifully combines nature, culture and gastronomy — a true immersion into the rhythm of the Douro.

Conclude the day towards the village of Celeirós, where your accommodation is settled and with a warm welcome and dinner at a wine estate.

Enjoy sweeping views across the valley as you make your way to the picturesque village of Sabrosa. Follow an ancient route between Sabrosa and Favaios, descending gently through the terraced vineyards to the river below. Then, climb once more through a patchwork of grapevines and olive groves as the landscape gradually transforms around you.

Pause in Favaios to sample the village’s famous wood-oven baked bread and a glass of Moscatel wine, a cherished local specialty. Continue onwards to the charming, historic town of Alijó, where you’ll spend the next two nights.

Setting out from Alijó, the path meanders through a vivid mosaic of vineyards, olive groves and small cultivated plots. The rhythm of the walk follows the gentle rise and fall of the land, offering new perspectives at every turn — a painter’s patchwork of greens and golds beneath the Douro. Arrive in the ancient village of São Mamede de Ribatua – perched above a glittering lake, framed by rugged, rock-strewn mountains.

After exploring the village, you can either follow a different scenic route back to Alijó or opt for a relaxed taxi transfer, giving you a leisurely afternoon to unwind and soak in the Douro’s tranquil charm.

Begin your day immersed once again in the heart of the Douro wine region. The trail winds through rows of vines heavy with grapes, the terraces following the contours of the hills like living sculptures. Along the way, pause to visit one or two quintas (wine estates). Their welcoming cellars offer not just tastings of fine Port and Douro wines, but stories of generations who have shaped this unique terrain.

By the end of the walk, you’ll have truly traced the spirit of the Douro: from riverbanks and terraces to hilltop villages — a journey woven together by wine, history and breathtaking views.

After breakfast, it’s time to prepare for your departure. If your schedule allows, take the opportunity to enjoy a boat tour along the Douro River or savor a final wine tasting in charming Pinhão village — a perfect way to bid farewell to the valley’s timeless beauty.
